ORCA’S RESULTS RECOGNIZED BY THE EUROPEAN COMMISSION
ORCA, the only civil society organisation in the region, selected as the member of the advisory body of the European Commission
Belgrade-Brussels, 15 May 2017, Organisation for Respect and Care of Animals – ORCA, was selected among other European organizations, by the European Union as the member of advisory body for animal welfare at the European Commission: European Commission Expert Group Platform on Animal Welfare.
The Platform is founded by the Decision of the European Commission C/2017/0280 from 24th January 2017 and its task is to assist European Commission with the development and coordination of activities related to animal welfare, especially with better application of EU rules on animal welfare, through exchanges of information and best practices and direct involvement of stakeholders.
The members of the Platform have been elected as part of the independent process conducted by the DG SANTE, and which was, among others, based on evaluation of experience and competences of organizations in animal welfare, especially in farm animal welfare and food safety.
Significant role of the Platform is to develop a dialogue between decision-makers, civil society, scientists and international organizations on animal welfare. Members of the Platform are some of the most significant animal welfare scientists in Europe, as well as civil society and professional organisations such as European farmers (COPA), European Community of Consumer Co-operatives, International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE), Royal Society for Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA), World Animal Protection (WAP), Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE) and others. Among selected organizations is also ORCA, as the only organization from the Western Balkans region.
Besides experts, professional and civil society organizations, members of the Platform are also public entities of European member states, Island, Luxembourg and Norway, as well as international organizations: World Bank, World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE), Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) of the United Nations and European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

“We can consider ORCA’s election for being a member of the animal welfare Platform as one of the greatest acknowledgments of our work in animal welfare at the territory of Serbia and the Western Balkans, such as developing animal welfare standards, integration of animal welfare education in official educational programmes, strengthening capacities of CSOs, and other related activities. The Platform membership is an important encouragement for our further work”, stated Elvir Burazerović, the director of ORCA, in regards to this important event.
